MPG (US) and every gallon value here use the US gallon, equal to 3.785411784 liters, not the imperial gallon. This estimate assumes constant fuel economy and price. Traffic, speed, load, weather and driving conditions can change actual fuel use. Other travel costs are not included.
Formula · How it works
Formula
Fuel used (L) = Distance (km) / Economy (km/L), or Distance (km) × Consumption (L/100 km) / 100; Fuel used (US gal) = Distance (mi) / MPG (US); Cost per trip = Fuel used × Fuel price; Totals = Per-trip amount × Number of tripsWith km/L, divide kilometers by economy to get liters. With L/100 km, multiply kilometers by consumption and divide by 100. With MPG (US), divide miles by MPG to get US gallons. Multiply fuel by its matching price per volume. Multiply each per-trip amount by the number of trips. Cost per 100 km or 100 miles uses the entered economy and fuel price, even when trip distance is zero.
Worked example
A 100 km trip at 10 km/L uses 10 L. At USD 1.50 per liter, the fuel cost is USD 15 per trip and USD 15 per 100 km. Three identical trips total 300 km, 30 L and USD 45. The same fuel economy can be entered as 10 L/100 km.
How it works
Changing distance or the number of trips changes fuel use and total cost proportionally. Changing the volume unit converts fuel price to the equivalent price per liter or US gallon. Selecting USD, EUR, GBP, KRW or JPY changes the currency label only; it does not convert exchange rates. A zero-distance trip uses zero fuel and has zero trip cost.
Common questions
How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?
Calculate fuel required from distance and fuel economy, then multiply by price per liter or US gallon. Use a fuel price with the same volume unit as the fuel amount.
What is the difference between km/L and L/100 km?
km/L measures distance traveled per liter, so a higher number indicates better economy. L/100 km measures fuel used over 100 km, so a lower number indicates better economy. The two values convert using 100 divided by the other value.
How is fuel use calculated from MPG?
Divide trip distance in miles by MPG (US) to get fuel required in US gallons. Multiply by the price per US gallon. This calculator does not use imperial gallons.
How do I estimate fuel cost for multiple trips?
Enter the distance for one trip and set the number of identical trips. The calculator multiplies per-trip distance, fuel and cost by that count. Include the return distance in each trip if needed.
